Best Value South African Wine Accolade a good indication that 2014 is going to be a great year for Alvi’s Drift.
As you receive this news, vintage is still in full swing. Early morning starts to bring in the grapes while they are still cold and fresh, fermentations bubbling in the tank, presses running around the clock and the endless activity in the cellar to bring to you the range of outstanding Alvi’s Drift wines.
How is the 2014 harvest?
There has been a lot of rain at different times during the growing season. Good vineyard management has ensured all of our grapes have arrived at the cellar in tip top condition. This coming week of good weather in the Cape has been very much appreciated.
The efforts of Alvi and Henk have paid off handsomely. The ferments in the tank look fantastic. Chenin blanc, chardonnay and viognier are all outstanding. Sauvignon is also looking good. The reds are also showing deep rich colours and juicy primary fruit characters.
When will you see the first 2014 wines?
While the white wines are still fermenting, we need to start planning our vintage role over now. We are planning to bottle our first chenin blanc and sauvignon blanc in late May. We could bottle them earlier, however, we feel the wines benefit from spending a little more time on their lees.
What else have we been up to?
Since our last newsletter, we have bottled the 2013 AD chardonnay, 2013 AD CVC and the second vintage of our Flagship white wine, Albertus Viljoen Chenin Blanc. All the wines are looking stunning in the bottle and we look forward to seeing how they develop over time.
We also bottled and released our first ever merlot. The 2013 Alvi’s Drift Signature (ADS) merlot is now available at various outlets nationwide. If you don’t see it, please ask for it or consider ordering it online. Our merlot, as you would expect, is a Batman version of the variety, bigger, bolder and a little darker than your average merlot/superhero.
Release of Albertus Viljoen
Another milestone was the release of the maiden vintage of the Albertus Viljoen chenin blanc. The wine is an outstanding chenin blanc from the 2012 harvest, barrel fermented and made in a complex, Burgundian style. Limited production of only 1,400 bottles means that most of you will never be able to submerse yourselves in this truly great wine experience. Distribution will be mainly through Alvi’s Wine Club and members will be the only ones assured of securing this oenological rarity. As mentioned in the last newsletter, it looked sensational at our end of year dinner and we had high hopes for the wine becoming the benchmark of wooded chenin blanc in South Africa. Since its release it has picked up a string of awards including National Champion at the SA Chenin Blanc challenge. Given that South Africa has more chenin blanc planted than the rest of the world combined, the question has to be asked if this is the best chenin in SA, is it the best chenin in the world. I personally haven’t ever tasted a better one!

We won 7 gold medals at the Catavinum World Wine and Spirit Awards. This was our best result ever at this prestigious Spanish wine competition. With only 9 wines entered, 7 gold and 2 silver was a better result than we had hoped for.
The gold medal winners are:
- 2012 Albertus Viljoen chenin blanc
- 2012 Alvi’s Drift AD chardonnay
- 2012 Alvi’s Drift AD CVC, chenin blanc, viognier, chardonnay
- 2011 Alvi’s Drift AD Drift Fusion
- Alvi’s Drift AD Thornlands MCC NV
- 2013 Alvi’s Drift Signature chenin blanc
- 2013 Alvi’s Drift Signature viognier
Alvi’s Drift Albertus Viljoen chenin blanc was declared the South African Champion at the recent SA Chenin Blanc challenge. With our Albertus Viljoen being selected as a unanimous 5 Star wine by all 5 judges and our Alvi’s Drift Signature chenin blanc being selected as the 3rd wine in the challenge, we were over the moon. The ADS chenin was also the only unwooded wine in the top 10. This effectively means that Alvi’s Drift has produced the top unwooded chenin blanc as well as the SA National champion chenin blanc. We believe this puts us in the running for the top chenin producer in country.
The SA Top 100 wines were announced on the 10th of April and Alvi’s Drift was again selected. The winners were the 2012 Albertus Viljoen Chenin Blanc and the 2013 ADS viognier. This is the 3rd year in a row where Alvi’s Drift supplied 2 or more of the Top 100 Wines.
With the Young Wine Show looming, we are looking forward to seeing how our wines fair in 2014. After 6 National Champions in the last 4 years, we are hopeful our run of victories will continue.
Wine of the Month
2013 ADS viognier. We are constantly reminded, times are tough. However, if you enjoy a glass of wine, you don’t have to break the bank to try world class wine. Our 2013 ADS viogner (a variety native to the Rhone valley in South Eastern France) is a great example of an award winning niche’ wine, made in a fruity, full bodied style. It has won gold at Michelangelo, Gold at Catavinum, Outstanding Silver at the IWSC and was awarded 4 star status by Platter (fourth vintage in a row). To top it all off, it was also selected in the SA Top 100 Wines in 2014. The wine is full flavoured with loads of apricot and peach fruit characters. Great with Asian dishes, soft cheese and poultry, this is the sort of wine which would also be enjoyed by someone looking for an unwooded chardonnay. It should be in your local Spar, PnP, Food Lovers Market or Liquor City. Also coming soon to Checkers.
The Resurgent Truro Daily News Wine Tasting Panel recently tasted our 2012 Alvi’s Drift Viognier. This wine, made with 100 per cent Viognier grapes, received the highest score of any wine reviewed by the Grapevine’s tasting panels to date.
