The National Wine Challenge 2017 Results

The National Wine Challenge 2017, incorporating Top 100 SA Wines, the premier fine-wine-only event in SA, launched the hugely popular 2017 winning wines results last night.

Top wineries, their wine makers and partners celebrated their victories at Crossly & Webb, the exclusive motor showroom in Cape Town.  The hallmark jazz band kept things light and superb winning wines upped the jovial mood.  Following the actual awards ceremony, in customary style the winning wines were opened for a bout of serious tasting.  Once again, records broke with a strong show of support; 500++ of the Capes best wines were entered.  A record number of wineries participated.

Alvi’s Drift received the following awards:

Top 100 & Double Platinum awards

Top 100 & Double Platinum awards

Alvi’s Drift Chardonnay Reserve 2016

For Alvi’s Drift,  the production of complex, full flavoured, yet balanced and elegant wines has continued to pay off. A Double Platinum award for the Alvi’s Drift Reserve Chardonnay is wonderful recognition for our winemaking team and confirmation of our chosen style.  This award is a testament to the time, effort and knowledge invested in the 2016 Chardonnay by the team.

We are very proud to win five Double Gold awards.    The Albertus Viljoen Chenin Blanc is our Flagship white.  Made using our best Chenin Blanc and a wide  range of traditional and innovative winemaking techniques, the resulting wine has fast become one of South Africa’s benchmark Chenin Blancs.   We believe this is a truly world class wine and are very glad to have this opinion reaffirmed by the judging panel.

The Alvi’s Drift CVC (Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay) has been a feature of our premium wine offering since its inception in 2010.  The blend marries the best of our full bodied white varieties to achieve our most complex white.   We are very conscious of consistency within our wines and I believe the CVC is our best example of achieving this goal.

The Bismarck red is a Shiraz based blend first made in 2012.  The wine is made in a ripe and juicy fruit driven style.  To have both the 2013 and 2014 win Double Gold at the one competition is a wonderful achievement.   We believe our Shiraz blends rival the best South Africa has to offer and are very pleased to see the judges are in agreement.

Alvi’s Drift Reserve Drift Fusion has consistently won gold medals since the first vintage in 2005.   Using Cabernet as a base and blending with Pinotage and Shiraz, the Drift Fusion is a great example of a Cape Blend.  While this category is uniquely South Africa, we are finding acceptance of the style across the world.   Recognition by independent, international judging panelists is a vital part of our marketing strategy whether at home or abroad, hence we are overjoyed  to receive this type of award.
