The Grapes

The grapes are all from our own farm. It was harvested selectively, in the early morning, by hand at a balling of 24°.

In The Cellar

The grapes were whole bunch pressed and the free run juice was fermented in the barrels with T306, CY3079 and Wild yeast. It was left on the fermentation lees to mature in the barrels for 11 months. Mostly 300 ltr French Oak barrels were used of which 30% were new barrels. The three components of the wine were matured on their own and were blended just before bottling.

The Wine

It is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay. The AD CVC has a lovely pale lemon/straw color. The nose showed lifted peach and apricot characters. A lovely blend of roasted nuts with a hint of butterscotch and ripe melons. The palate is balanced to perfection with oak, fruit, and acidity all adding to the wines length and fullness. Great with Asian dishes, seafood and soft cheeses.

The packaging

Founded in 1928, Alvi’s Drift cellar has produced a string of award winning wines. The AD range is the culmination of our pursuit of producing wines of the highest quality and unrivaled complexity. On the label you can see the Van der Merwe crest as a watermark in the background and the pillars at the bottom of the label and capsule symbolizes the low water bridge from which the cellar gets it’s name.

  1. Michel Bernard

I picked up a bottle of this nectar by chance at the Cape Town Airport Dutyfree at the end of a wine trip to the Winelands in early March – feels like ages now … I had never heard about Alvi’s Drifit, although I have been following SA wines for quite a few years – I am a big fan., and the competition is pretty fierce where I live, in London UK. When I read on the back label that it was a blend of Ch blanc/Viognier/Chardonnay I knew I had to try it – white blends are to me one of the shining stars of SA winemaking, and among the 3-4 styles available the Chenin blanc dominated ones are my favorites. They remind me of the best Rhone whites from where I come from originally. And on top of that it was an absolute bargain at under £8. This Alvi’s Drive Reserve CVC is powerful but fresh and clean, it would have been even better if I had waited a bit longer but never mind – in these days of CoV-19 you should not wait too long for your pleasure !

Alvi’s Drift Reserve CVC has been my all time favourite since I tasted it first two years ago. It compares with wines three times its price. A winner in my books and I’d like the whole world to know. Loving this deep, complex, full round yet clean blend to absolute bits. Please Alvi’s Drift, before you triple your pricing, allow me to buy out your full stock of this heavenly product!
