NWC/Top100

NWC / TOP 100 SA WINES 2019

This prestigious and hotly contested challenge sees a panel of top local and international judges pit themselves against thousands of exceptional submissions to rate wines per cultivar and blend. The top 100 best scoring wines across all cultivars and blends make it into the top 100 list with the best wine in each category being awarded the coveted position of “best in class”.

5 wines from Alvi’s Drift made the top 100 this year:

  • The Verreaux – Pinotage
  • Albertus Viljoen “Bismarck” – Cape Blend
  • Albertus Viljoen Chardonnay
  • Alvi’s Drift Reserve “CVC” – White blend
  • Alvis Drift Signature Chenin blanc

Our Flagship “Verreaux continues to be recognised as one of the best examples of Pinotage in South Africa.

All three wines in our Icon Tier, named after the iconic founder of Alvis Drift “Albertus Viljoen”,  find themselves with awards in the top 100 awards.

The Albertus Viljoen Chardonnay is a new addition to the family which will be launched later this year. 100% Barrel fermented with confident use of wild fermentation, this wine is, to us, the epitome of what this grape can do on this farm. – we are ecstatic that it has done so well on its introduction – being selected as one of the top 100 wines in the country is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of our wonderful team.

The Bismarck was given the singular honor of being selected as the best in its class.

The Albertus Viljoen “Bismarck forms part of our icon tier which proudly bear the name of the charismatic founder of the family farm. These wines represent the best of the harvest on Alvi’s Drift – barrel fermented with judicious use of wild fermentation to produce outstanding, full-bodied and complex wines. Albertus Viljoen, or “Alvi” to his friends, was a larger than life character who established a property on the scenic Breede river, south of Worcester in 1928. Alvi was instrumental in having a bridge built across the river to provide better access for the farm and the community. Over the years, this bridge has become known locally as “Alvi’s Drift”.

The Albertus Viljoen “Bismarck” is a unique seven-way blend of 42% Shiraz, 25% Pinotage, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Grenache, 2% Viognier and 4% Petit Syrah. This is an elegant but full-bodied wine, luxurious on the palate, exhibiting generous ripe dark berry and spicy pepper characters. The “Bismarck” name comes from the family Great Dane. His proud, regal bearing commanded respect and acceptance of him being the undisputed alfa male of the pack. Superior in stature and loyalty, visiting wine-lovers to Alvi’s Drift Estate were welcomed with a loud bark and vigorous wag of the tail! With the Bismarck Wine, we honour his legacy. – The Albertus Viljoen wines are available at select specialist wine shops or directly from our website.

Also in the line-up of top 100’s is the Reserve “CVC”.

This blend of Chenin blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay has become somewhat of a regular in the top awards at shows both locally and abroad. It is a deliciously complex wine; each variety being vinified separately in a combination of barrel and tank – showcasing the best of each variety to produce a full, fresh and mouth-wateringly good wine that will stand up to most foods, but is particularly enjoyable on its own. – Available at leading retailers or on our website at R110 a bottle.

Lastly and by no means the least is our Signature Chenin blanc:

Anyone who know us knows that we strive to deliver the best experience in your glass – whatever your budget. Somewhat significantly, our humble entry level Signature Chenin blanc has once again been singled out as an outstanding example of Chenin blanc – this time making it into the top 100 of all chenin blanc in the country.

This is not the first time one of our Signature wines has made it onto the top 100 list – leaving some higher priced and well known brands blushing on the sidelines – the 2016 Shiraz famously made it nearly to the top of its category in 2018. This unwooded chenin follows in these proud footsteps and punches far above its class – delivering delicious fresh pineapple and white peach characters and a wonderful full mouthfeel and texture – this chenin is available at leading retailers for R65 a bottle.
