Named in honour of the mighty Verraux’s eagle that soars high above our vineyards, Alvi’s Drift presents a 100% Pinotage wine as rare, bold, and elegant as this magnificent bird. Made in small volumes only and blended from individually selected barrels, this wine is the ultimate symbol of the heights and resilience one can reach.
Sourced from a 20-year-old vineyard rooted in ancient limestone soils, Alvi’s Drift Verreaux Black Eagle Pinotage 2023 reflects the power of terroir. These mineral-rich soils provide the ideal foundation for grapes to produce a wine of exceptional depth and character. The limestone influence enhances freshness, resulting in a one-of-a-kind wine that is both bold and refined – a true expression of place.
To create this wine, Pinotage grapes were crushed and transferred to our winery’s traditional, open-top concrete fermentation tanks, constructed nearly a century ago by our founder, Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe (or ‘Oupa Alvi,’ as we still fondly refer to him).
During fermentation, punch-downs (pigéage) were performed by hand, up to eight times daily, to optimise skin-to-juice contact and enhance both colour and flavour extraction.
Following fermentation, the wine was left to soak on the skins for several days before being transferred to a combination of new French and American oak barrels. It was then matured for 12 months before final bottling.
Absolutely loved this blend, just placed another order!
