Learn more about empowerment & sustainability at Alvi’s Drift.
At our core lies a deep commitment to crafting products that champion our workers and respect the earth, all while shaping a better tomorrow. Join us on our journey towards a more sustainable and mindful future. For our people, for our business, for our greater community and for our planet.
At Alvi’s Drift, we believe education is a powerful driver of change. For decades, we’ve supported over 500 workers and their families with access to a school, crèche, and community centre.
This commitment began in 1949, when Ouma Emmarentia, wife of our founder Oupa Alvi, began offering literacy education to workers on her farmhouse stoep. While socio-economic challenges remain, our purpose has never wavered.
Today, we’ve partnered with the Indaba Institute for Early Childhood Development to create a measurable, lasting impact. This partnership goes beyond funding, focusing on teacher training, improved infrastructure, and giving every child the strongest possible start in life.
A portion of the proceeds from every bottle of our Albertus Viljoen Icon Range sold supports this initiative.
We’re deeply committed to conserving our planet and its precious resources.
This commitment is evident in various initiatives across our farm, including our goal to return 50% of our land to its original fauna and flora. Another project on the horizon is exploring the restoration of traditional waterways to support local wildlife while mitigating localised flooding.
Our farm already uses solar power, and we’re actively investigating biogas digesters for sustainable cooling. To maintain ecological balance, we introduced the appropriate animals and herd sizes, collaborating with specialised tertiary institutions to effectively manage these efforts. Concurrently, we’re working with other dedicated institutions to identify and protect endangered (red-listed) plants in and around Alvi’s Drift.
Another noteworthy effort is the revolutionary underground irrigation system we deployed across two blocks of vineyards. We plan to expand it further for enhanced water efficiency and sustainability.
Our sustainability efforts extend beyond the vineyards, as well. As of 2024, we began using lightweight glass for bottling our Signature Selection wines and plan to expand this practice across our other tiers. This significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with glass production.
At Alvi’s Drift, our commitment to true sustainability is embodied in each step we take to protect and preserve our environment for future generations.
We’re always striving to improve our efficiency, as doing so enables us to pass savings on to our loyal customers.
As a socially responsible and environmentally conscious winery, we recognise the pivotal importance of economic viability and supply chain optimisation.
We believe offering fair compensation for our wines is essential – not only for the growth of our business, but also to safeguard the well-being of our employees, their families, and our greater community.
Embracing sustainable practices in winemaking while future-proofing our business lends credibility to our enterprise. It also enables us to offer a more secure future for our workers, allowing us to Dare To Do Right as we go about our daily business.
One thing is for certain: at Alvi’s Drift, we’ll never compromise on quality.
Our commitment to excellence ensures that every bottle of our wine upholds the highest standards, reflecting both our passion for winemaking and our dedication to our people, greater community, and planet.
