“Our 221 Chenin Blanc is 30% barrel-fermented, with the remainder fermented in-tank. It has twice been among the winners in the Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge, and it’s just a consistently excellent wine with enough primary fruit flavours to age beautifully.” – Alvi van der Merwe
Named in honour of our founder, Oupa Alvi’s legacy as the 221st player to represent South Africa as a Springbok, our 221 Chenin Blanc celebrates both our family’s heritage and our passion for winemaking.
Wild Yeast Fermented & Aged in French Oak and Acacia
Crafted using only the highest-quality free-run juice, approximately 30% of this wine is wild yeast-fermented and aged in predominantly older French oak barrels, with the recent addition of a few French Acacia barrels to enhance complexity and depth. The remaining 70% is fermented in stainless steel tanks, preserving the wine’s bright, primary fruit character.
With our 221 range, we honour our patriarch, Oupa Alvi, and celebrate the legacy of South Africa’s Springbok rugby team.
