It’s 1928. Alvi van der Merwe, representing Western Province Country, becomes the first player to score a try against the touring All Blacks on African soil; a defining moment in South African rugby history.
He goes on to earn Springbok cap number 221 during the 1931–32 tour of Britain and Ireland.
It was his moment of greatness. And the number continues to carry his legacy forward.
