It’s 1928. Alvi van der Merwe, representing Western Province Country, becomes the first player to score a try against the touring All Blacks on African soil; a defining moment in South African rugby history. He goes on to earn Springbok cap number 221 during the 1931–32 tour of Britain and Ireland. It was his moment of greatness. And the number continues to carry his legacy forward.
Today, it lives on in every glass of 221: wines inspired by rugby, made for every story worth sharing.Discover the 221 Range →

For me, it’s the 1995 Rugby World Cup final at Ellis Park. South Africa beating New Zealand in extra time, Nelson Mandela walking out in that No. 6 Springbok jersey, and Francois Pienaar lifting the Webb Ellis Cup, with the whole country watching
My greatest rugby Memory was being a part of CPUT Rugby team in 2016 who help CPUT to qualify for Varsity Shield for the first time in history. Putting CPUT in the South African map to be recognised as University who has rugby was my biggest achievement and greatest moments of my life.
I remember, before COVID came, how we worked and watched the main games, with colleagues. Such a great vibe and team spirit. #springboks #the221game #alvisdriftwines

My 221 Moment definitely has to be the charge down from our Cheslin Kolbe against France in the 2023 Rugby World Cup Quarter finals on Thomas Ramos conversation kick!!!! #The221Game
South Africa winning the 2023 Rugby World Cup, with Siya Kolisi lifting the Webb Ellis Cup for the second time as captain. The Springboks won three consecutive knockout matches by just one point (29–28 vs France, 16–15 vs England, and 12–11 vs New Zealand), making it one of the most dramatic World Cup runs ever.
It was a club game around 2011, when I got to play my first senior match alongside my older brother. To everyone else, it was just another Saturday of rugby. To me, it was everything. At the time, I thought we'd have many more games together. Life had other plans. Not long after, my brother passed away, and that match became our first and our last game together. Looking back, I realise that the score, the result, and even my own performance don't matter. What matters is that I got to live every rugby-loving brother's dream. Rugby gave me a memory that time can never take away, and for that, I'll always be grateful.
After winning the rugby lottery by being eligible to purchase match day tickets, one of my most memorable Springbok rugby memories happened on the 7th of September 2024, when our boys defeated New Zealand 18-12 in a nail bitting battle. The atmosphere and gees in the stadium was electric and once the final whistle blew the stadium erupted with cheer and celebrations.
Most definitely my son's first ever live game at Newlands. He was only 3 years old. It was really special. He is 11years old now and we go to many matches together. He is a very passionate Stormers and Springbok supporter. I enlarged this pic, framed it and it's up in my braai area
