Our vineyards are grown using a philosophy of sustainability and minimal intervention and are fertilized with natural compost produced on the farm. Vineyards are meticulously managed to optimize quality. Grapes are selectively hand harvested to ensure only healthy, ripe bunces are used for production. These single variety wines proudly bear the signature of Alvi Van Der Merwe and are carefully crafted to bring the delight of each grape variety within everyone’s reach – delivering variety specific ripe, juicy and fresh primary fruit character with each sip.
In 1928, the All- Black rugby team, known as the invincibles was unassailable. They arrived on the shores of South Africa aboard the Warratah after completing an undefeated tour of the British Colonies and France – expecting to continue this record. The rugby world was rocked when a young, unknown, 19-year old Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe, “Alvi” to his friends, scored the first try in history against the All-blacks on African soil. Our Charismatic founder gripped the world’s imagination by scoring this try and went on to be selected as the 221st player to play for the South African national rugby team,” The Springboks”.
The reserve tier showcases the best of our harvest, a fusion of our signature fresh, primary fruit style with a hint of the luscious and opulent barrel fermented style of our Icon tier. The labels of the Reserve tier feature an illustration of Alvi’s Drift, the low-water bridge which Albertus Viljoen van der Mewer was instrumental in building back in 1928 to facilitate easier and safer crossing of the Breede river.
Albertus Viljoen van der Mewer, Alvis to his friends, established a property South of Worcester in 1928
and his son, Bertie to his friends, started producing wine. Today the wines are being made by his grandchildren,
the property has grown from humble beginnings to the world-renowned Alvi’s drift wine farm it is today. The “Albertus Viljoen” range is the best of the harvest, fermented in barrels to produce an outstanding, complex and full-bodied wine.
The ancient shale soils on the South Facing slopes of Alvi’s Drift’s “Thornlands” vineyards produce outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which are the cornerstone of Alvi’s Drift’s sparkling wine portfolio.
